  11.        Installing Talking ABC's from a distribution disk:
  12.        ------------------------------------------------- 
  13.           1.  Put disk #1 in drive A  (or B).
  14.               (3½ disks only have 1 disk)
  15.  
  16.           2.  Type A:INSTALL  (or B:INSTALL)
  17.  
  18.           3. Answer the questions.  The program  
  19.              will create a directory called      
  20.              ABC and will copy all the files     
  21.              to it. When it is finished you      
  22.              will be able to run the program     
  23.              from your hard disk.                
  24.                                                  
  25.           4. Put away your disks in a safe        
  26.              place.                               
  27.                                                  
  28.           5. You should have about 60 *.tsx files,
  29.              ABC.EXE, BEACH, BEACH.ABC, RMN40.CGA and
  30.              RMN40.GFT in your directory now.
  31.                                                  
  32.        Starting Talking ABC's:                   
  33.        -----------------------                   
  34.          1.  Be sure you are on the hard disk. 
  35.              type:  C: (or whatever drive) and press the 
  36.              enter key.                                  
  37.                                                          
  38.          2.  Change to the ABC directory by typing:  
  39.                   CD \ABC  
  40.              and press the Enter key.                    
  41.                                                          
  42.          3.  Type:   ABC  
  43.              and press the enter key.

  47.        Stopping Talking ABC's:

  49.          1. Press the <Esc> key to get the               
  50.             menu.                                        
  51.                                                          
  52.          2. Press the <Esc> key again to                 
  53.             stop the program.

  56.      TROUBLE SHOOTING                                                    
  57.      ----------------                                    
  58.                                                          
  59.         1. Garbled sound:  Remove programs like Windows Enhanced mode, 
  60.            Deskview and others that multitask.  Note: You can run 
  61.            Windows in standard mode and Talking ABC's will work fine.  
  62.            To start Windows in standard mode type: 
  63.                Win /s
  64.            Windows may be started automatically by your AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  65.            file.  You can go into that file and add the /S to the WIN 
  66.            statement to cause Windows to run in standard mode.  If you 
  67.            do things like receive faxes in the background this might 
  68.            not be a good thing to do.  For most people it will be 
  69.            fine. 
  70.                                                          
  71.         2. Insufficient memory message: Remove TSR's.  Reboot.  
  72.                           
  73.         3. No sound at all.  You may have forgotten the second 
  74.            distribution file called ABCZIP2.EXE.  You need to unzip it 
  75.            to your hard disk.  Follow the installation instructions. 
  76.            If you have files called A.tsx, airplane.tsx etc then you 
  77.            have already done this.  Also, sound does not work if you 
  78.            start the program while running WINDOWS on a 386 (enhanced 
  79.            mode).

  81.         4. You have an EGA but the program will only run in CGA:
  82.            Try starting ABC's like this:
  83.                   ABC  E   <enter>
  84.            This will force it into EGA mode.  This happens a lot on
  85.            Tandy 1000's.
  86.  
  87.         5. You type ABC, nothing happens and you have to reboot your
  88.            computer.
  89.              You probably have a program already loaded in memory that 
  90.            is conflicting with Talking ABC's.  One program that does 
  91.            this is the Ultrasound TSR that emulates the SoundBlaster.  
  92.            There may be others. Try this: 
  93.  
  94.              Create a plain DOS boot disk with the following steps:
  95.                  Put a blank diskette in Drive A:
  96.                  Type: FORMAT A: /S
  97.                  Type: SYS A:
  98.              Now reboot with your disk in the A: drive.
  99.                   Type: C:             (or whatever drive ABC's is on)
  100.                   Type: CD \ABC        (or whatever directory ABC's is in)
  101.                   Type: ABC
  102.            
  103.              If this fixes the problem then there is something in your 
  104.              AUTOEXEC.BAT file that is conflicting with Talking ABC's.
